Cumming, GA- Things to do
Cumming, GA is a small and quiet beautiful city in Forsyth County, GA, a part of metro Atlanta area.
There are many things to do here but one of my favorite one is visiting Sawnee Mountain Preserve, an almost 1000 acre park with hiking trails located less than 50 miles north of the center of the beautiful Atlanta.
This place is rich in history being known as the woodland culture of Native American inhabitants. Even the name of the mountain comes from local Cherokee Native American. The Indian Seats legend is a bittersweet legend you need to listen because the land was taken from the Cherokee. In the visitor center you can find exhibits of natural history along with exhibits of cultural history of the Sawnee Mountain and also a library and a lounge for the visitors to read or just relax.
My favorite thing to do here is taking a hike to a natural rock formation called Indian Seats just to enjoy the view of the beautiful N Georgia Mountain. To the north your view is the wonderful Appalachian Mountains. This is 100% the best place to take those family photos. The best time for them is in the fall when the trees change colors. You will find yourself in a beautiful painting you will remember for a while.
Don’t forget to wear your hiking boots, water and snacks because it will be a 4 mile hike and you will need to stop a few times if you are not used to climbing. The east side of Bettis- Tribble Gap Road offers loop hikes that very a lot in difficulties. The steepness of the trail it’s not at all challenging, it’s just the roots and rocks make it a little bit difficult as you have to keep look down to avoid tripping on something. Because of the roots and rocks don’t think to bring a stroller if you have younger kids, it’s not going to work! This is not a good place with young kids, wheelchairs or strollers. Definitely a great work out, but all the effort will worth it when you get to the top for the gorgeous view. The top is the best spot to relax and enjoy.
There are also pavilions and a playground for the little ones but don’t forget your sunscreen and hat as the playground is not covered and in the Georgia summer it can get really hot
Surviving a few natural disasters, searchers for gold, urban development and other, the mountain today is the home to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve, awarded for an outstanding green space plan and the Sawnee Visitor Center, awarded by the council for outstanding new development.
